Mihrab, is the main architectural element that identifies the qibla direction in mosques and prayer rooms and defines the area where the imam leads prayer. Alongside its functional role, the arrangement of stone, wood, muqarnas, calligraphy and decorative painting around it makes it the interior’s visual focal point.
Why is the mihrab one of the mosque’s main focal points?
Located on the qibla wall towards which the congregation faces, the mihrab provides a strong functional and visual reference point. The depth of the niche, frame proportions and upper finish are designed according to the mosque’s overall architectural language.
Which applications can be used around a mihrab?
Depending on the project, muqarnas, calligraphy and decorative painting can support the mihrab composition. The aim is not to highlight every detail separately, but to establish a clear hierarchy on the qibla wall.
What should be considered when renewing an existing mihrab?
The surface condition, dimensions, existing ornamentation and the building’s historical character are examined. Where original details need preserving, a restoration approach should be preferred to ordinary refurbishment.
